Our Intern Aliveah Reflects on a Summer at Advokate

It’s incredibly hard to summarize everything I’ve learned this summer because, honestly, there’s been so much. I’m especially grateful to have learned many of the tools used in day-to-day marketing, including Squarespace, Meta Business Suite, and, most importantly, TinyPNG. I came in already familiar with tools like Canva and Adobe Express, but throughout my internship, I’ve learned how tools like WordPress and Adobe Illustrator can make certain processes much easier and more efficient than they initially seem.

Arguably more importantly, though, I learned what it’s really like to work with business owners. Many of Advokate’s clients are small business owners who have poured so much time, passion, and love into their businesses. When they trust you with something that feels almost like their child, there’s a lot to navigate. Sometimes their expectations and your ideas don’t perfectly line up. Other times, you think teal is more blue, while they think it’s definitely more green.

We’re all individuals with our own ideas, opinions, and expectations, and shadowing Kate as she navigates those differences and works to get everyone on the same page has been incredibly insightful. I’ve learned that communication is one of the most important parts of marketing. After all, marketing is ultimately about communicating a brand’s identity and story to the world.

As I leave Advokate, I think that will be my biggest takeaway: good marketing starts with good communication.

The people at Advokate are incredibly special, and it’s clear how much care, thought, and compassion they put into their work. They genuinely care about their clients, their work, and each other, and that kind of environment is something I’ve really appreciated being a part of. You don’t always come across that level of passion and care in a workplace, and I feel very lucky to have experienced it this summer.

Thank you so much to Kate, Jess, Candice, and Gina for letting me be part of the squad for a little while! I’m so grateful for all the time, guidance, and laughs you’ve shared with me along the way. And thank you to every client I had the chance to meet or whose work I got to help with, you guys rock! It’s been so much fun getting to be a small part of what you’re building.
