Three Shirt Factory artists show from June 3 to July 3 at the Shirt Factory Gallery

GLENS FALLS, NY — The Shirt Factory Gallery presents “Conceptual Currents,” a show featuring works in watermedia by Shirt Factory artists Betty O’Brien, Laura Neadle and Kate Austin-Avon. The show runs from June 3 to July 3, 2015, with an opening reception with wine and refreshments on Saturday, June 6, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Shirt Factory Gallery is open Wednesdays to Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m., and is located on the first floor in Suite 120 at the loading dock entrance of the Shirt Factory Arts and Healing Center, at 71 Lawrence Street in Glens Falls, New York. Elizabeth (Betty) O’Brien is a regionally known award-winning artist who has participated in both regional and national shows. Betty describes her work as ranging in style from abstract to “expressively realistic.” Her subjects’ qualities are exaggerated and reconfigured. Media manipulations and expressive marks further push reality beyond the descriptive. She finds inspiration in the landscape and organic lyrical forms in nature. Betty retired from teaching and operates The Watermedia Academy on the second floor of the Shirt Factory, leading workshops in expressive drawing and painting, and watercolor. Laura Neadle has worked in traditional watercolor techniques for years, and in the past few years has expanded into other watermedia such as acrylic, inks, and several kinds of supports and grounds. She earned her art degree from Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania, and has continued her studies with many well-known artists and instructors. She has exhibited at many venues in the area, and received awards and shown at prestigious juried shows including The Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors. Kate Austin-Avon has been showing her textural, experimental watermedia artwork in the Glens Falls area since 2007, and also operates her marketing, design and PR firm Advokate out of her art studio on the second floor of The Shirt Factory. Kate works mainly on Yupo, a plastic paper that allows the color to slide over the top of it, delivering a challenge in release of control. Kate’s process is exploratory and historically has also been autobiographical, but this show features mainly abstract works; some with deeper meaning and some that are purely playforms. Kate E. Austin is known for her creative advocacy. She is a regular speaker on branding and social media with educational institutions and Chambers of Commerce. She owns and operates Advokate, LLC. Currently she serves on the boards of the Glens Falls Business Improvement District, is on the World Awareness Children’s Museum’s Advisory Council, and is involved in the Jackson Heights PTA.
