Press Release: Shirt Factory goes Green! Solar panels & high efficiency lights

GLENS FALLS, NY — The Shirt Factory Arts and Healing Center is going green! Installation is underway for 896 Kyocera solar panels on the roof of The Shirt Factory, a historic Glens Falls factory that is now home to more than 80 specialty shops, galleries, artist studios, healing arts and services.

The total solar panel system is expected to generate a peak power of 175 kilowatts. Installation is expected to be completed by the end of February 2014.

Additionally, 250 light fixtures in the building have been replaced with high efficiency ones over the course of January and February, mostly in the hallways and first floor.

“When this initiative is completed, the building’s electricity needs should be mostly met by solar,” says Mr. Unkauf. “Importantly to me, this means that the tenants of The Shirt Factory will enjoy the benefits of a price-stable source of electricity for the lifespan of the system.”

These efficiency measures and the solar panels project is expected to displace 250,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere, as well as 800 pounds of sulfur and 280 pounds of nitrous oxide.
